This particular Essex Woodland has had one of the best Summers for Butterflies this year and this photo was taken during the peak of it. Purple Hairstreak Butterflies tend to spend the majority of the time fairly high up in the canopy of oak trees. Fortunately I had found a smaller oak with lower branches in a sunny spot that had a lot of Hairstreak activity on it. Every now and again in between mating and fluttering around, an individual would land lower down on the tree and rest. In this instance one landed at head height in a good spot, free of any background clutter and gave me a rare opportunity to capture a detailed head on shot with this rather elusive tiny Butterfly.
